New Leadership, Membership meeting and opportunities for you!

New Leadership at LEAF

As you may have heard, our visionary founder, Bruce Cates, has resigned as president after a seven-year tenure. We owe so much to Bruce for his tenacity in getting both LEAF gardens started and building a vital community here in Fremont!

At September’s board meeting, Mia Mora was voted in as the new president. She started with LEAF in its second year, served a stint as board secretary, and coordinated several LEAF events, including food swaps, fundraisers and, most recently, LEAF’s Harvest Music Festival (along with Mary Nelson and Michael McNevin.) She and her team were also responsible for installing the LEAF Center systems.

Membership Meeting

Stay posted for a members-only meeting to be held in November/December. Members will get to vote on environmental themes for 2017 and beyond. Now that our two gardens are built, we’ll be focusing on the ‘E’ in LEAF (ecology).

Meet the board and hear about new plans for LEAF going forward and the latest on the California Nursery Historical Park’s Master Plan.

We’re looking to build teams, adding to our small but mighty group of volunteers. The winter season will be slow at both gardens, but there are plenty of opportunities that don’t require gloves and shovels.

If you’re interested in learning more about any of the following volunteer positions, please email We look forward to hearing from you!

  • Membership coordinator
  • Volunteer coordinator
  • Volunteer coordinators for students (all ages) and Scouts
  • Website administrator (for soon-to-be-launched WordPress website)
  • Social media coordinator
  • Grant writer
  • Marketing coordinator
  • Graphic designer
  • Newsletter editors (2)
  • Event planners (2)
  • Workshop speakers coordinators (2)
  • Stone Garden liaison with Tri-City Volunteers
  • Stone Garden volunteer coordinator (weekends)
  • Stone Garden volunteer coordinator (week days)

We’ll be taking a break from workshops in November and December and possibly longer since we need workshop coordinators. Many thanks to Mellicent Fraticelli for finding and scheduling speakers and to Bill Spicer for setting up workshops at the LEAF Center. We’re looking for a couple of people to cover for Mellicent Fraticelli. Interested?
